What the Price Covers

The $300 per person covers the transport, the guide, border clearance and lunch, but not the permit, the visa or the gear. The table below splits the listing's own inclusions and exclusions, and one line needs checking with the operator before you pay.

How the Listings Compare

The table sets these figures side by side, and anything not stated is marked that way.

Lunch after the trekYesIn the forest area or a nearby town or lodge, about 1 hour

One Line to Confirm Before Booking

The platform's Includes list carries a line for the $800 gorilla permit, but the tour details say the Uganda gorilla permit is not included and is bought separately for $800 a person. The two statements contradict each other. Treat the permit as a separate $800 cost until the booking page confirms otherwise, and ask the operator in writing if you are unsure.

What You Still Pay for

Beyond the permit, the listing excludes the Ugandan visa, flights, accommodation before or after the trek, personal expenses, alcohol, wines and personal drinks, tips and souvenirs, packed breakfast or snacks, and a face mask, hand garden gloves, rain jacket and backpack. Bring cash for the permit payment process, porters if you hire one, and any gear you need.

Pros and Cons

An honest read of this listing against the other Kigali-based options.

What we genuinely like

  • The cheapest way into Bwindi in this set, at $300 per person plus the $800 permit
  • Uganda's $800 permit against Rwanda's $1,500 is the biggest saving available from Kigali
  • Free cancellation up to 24 hours in advance, with reserve now and pay later
  • Rated 4.8 from 18 verified bookings
  • Private or small group options, up to 8 people, with border clearance and lunch included

The honest downsides

  • A 2:00 am start and a return around 8:00-9:00 pm make a very long single day
  • The gorilla permit is not in the price despite appearing on the platform's Includes list, so confirm before paying
  • No accommodation, so no rest before an early start or after a late return
  • The sector of Bwindi is not stated, and trek length of 1 to 6 hours makes the return time uncertain
  • No porter is stated in the price, and the rain jacket, backpack, gloves and face mask are excluded

Who it's NOT for: Travellers who want a slower pace or an overnight near the park should book the 2-day Bwindi trek from Kigali instead.

Before You Go

A Kigali-to-Bwindi day crosses a border, needs a permit booked ahead, and demands wet-forest gear. Get these four things right before the van arrives at 2:00 am.

Visa and Health Paperwork

Uganda requires a visa, applied for online in advance, at $50 for a single entry tourist visa. Uganda Immigration states there are no visas issued on arrival, so carry your approval letter. If you plan to see both countries, the East African Tourist Visa at $100 covers Uganda, Rwanda and Kenya for 90 days and is issued by the first country of entry.

A yellow fever vaccination certificate is an entry requirement for Uganda for all travellers aged 1 year or older, and CDC recommends prescription malaria medicine for travel to Uganda.

The Permit Deadline

Book the $800 permit when you book the tour. UWA permits are paid in full at booking, with no unpaid reservation window, and low season permits for April, May and November cannot be rescheduled. If you cancel the tour, remember the permit is a separate purchase with its own terms.

What to Bring and Wear

The listing asks for a camera, cash and closed-toe shoes. Its excluded-items list tells you the rest is on you: a rain jacket, backpack, face mask and hand garden gloves. The Gorilla Friendly Pledge recommends hiking boots or sturdy shoes, waterproof clothing, long sleeves and gloves for the trail.

Porters are available at the parks to carry backpacks and cameras and help on the route, and gumboots, raincoats and gloves can be hired at park headquarters in Rwanda's parks, so ask about similar hire at the Bwindi briefing.

Age and Fitness

The trek can take 1 to 6 hours through dense jungle that is steep and challenging. Uganda's minimum trekking age is 15. This listing is not suitable for children under 14 or for people over 95, and anyone ill is turned back at the briefing, so do not trek with a cold or flu.

Why Trek Bwindi From Kigali Instead of Entebbe?

Kigali is the practical gateway to southern Bwindi for many travellers, and the saving is the reason.

No Domestic Flight Needed

From Entebbe, reaching Bwindi means a long road haul or a domestic flight. UWA says the Kisoro and Kihihi airstrips have daily flights from Entebbe, and the Kisoro flight takes about 1 hour 10 minutes, but flights are not cheap and they add airport time. Flying into Kigali instead puts you within road range of Bwindi's southern sectors, with no domestic flight to pay for.

No Extra Nights in Entebbe

Starting from Kigali also removes the hotel nights you would otherwise spend in Entebbe before and after a flight. This tour picks you up at 2:00 am, treks the same morning, and drops you at your Kigali hotel or the airport by around 8:00-9:00 pm. That is one night of accommodation fewer than an Entebbe-based plan.

The cost is the early start and the long day, so if that sounds heavy, the 2-day Bwindi trek from Kigali splits the drive with a night near the park.

How the Tour Runs

The day starts in the dark in Kigali and ends late the same evening. Every time below comes from the listing itself, so treat the trek length and return window as ranges rather than promises.

Pickup and the Drive to the Park

The van collects you in Kigali at 2:00 am Rwandan time, depending on the option selected, and meeting points can vary. The listing labels the outbound transfer as about 4 hours, arriving at Bwindi Impenetrable National Park around 7:00-8:00 am. You head straight to park headquarters, where rangers brief you on the rules for gorilla trekking.

The Trek and Lunch

The trek starts around 9:30 am and can take 1 to 6 hours through dense jungle that is steep and challenging, depending on where the gorilla family is. Once located, you spend one hour with the family, watching them feed and the babies play. Lunch follows in the early afternoon, either in the forest area, a nearby town or a lodge, for about 1 hour.

The Drive Back

After lunch the van sets off for Kigali, which the listing places around 7:00-8:00 pm for the departure, with a lunch stop noted on the return leg. Evening arrival in Kigali is around 8:00-9:00 pm, with drop-off at your hotel or the airport. If you have a late-night flight out of Kigali that evening, leave a wide buffer or book the 2-day Bwindi trek instead.

Which Border Do You Cross From Kigali to Bwindi?

Two road crossings link Rwanda and south western Uganda, and either can serve a Bwindi trek from Kigali.

Katuna and Cyanika

Katuna, also written Gatuna, connects Kabale in Uganda to Rwanda. Cyanika, also written Chanika, connects Kisoro District in Uganda to Burera District of Rwanda. The southern Bwindi sectors around Kisoro sit closer to Cyanika, while the Kabale side of the hills feeds routes toward other parts of the park.

The listing does not state which post this tour uses, so ask the operator when you book.

How Long the Drive Takes

Independent Bwindi guides put the Kigali to Bwindi road journey at about 4 to 5 hours via Gatuna or Katuna or via Chanika, which matches the listing's own 4-hour outbound transfer label. No official drive time from Kigali to Bwindi is published, so the tour's own times are the figure to plan around. No drive time from Kigali to Bwindi is stated by UWA or any Rwandan official page, and the FCDO notes that regional border restrictions can change at short notice, which is one more reason to keep the schedule loose.

The Park and the Gorilla Trek

This tour treks in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in south western Uganda, in the Kisoro and Kanungu region. The listing does not name the sector, so your permit decides where you trek.

The Park and the Rules on the Trail

Bwindi covers 321 km2 at 1,160 m to 2,607 m above sea level and protects about 459 mountain gorillas, roughly half the world's population by UWA's count. Uganda's rules set the minimum trekking age at 15, a maximum of eight visitors per gorilla group, a one hour visit, a 10 m distance from the animals and no flash photography. Treks last between 2 and 7 hours with 60 minutes of observation, and the park has four sectors: Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga and Nkuringo.

The listing's own under-14 age band is a booking category for the vehicle, not the trek rule, so a 14-year-old cannot trek even if the tour accepts them as a passenger.

The Permit and How It Is Bought

The Uganda gorilla permit costs $800 for foreign non-residents, $700 for foreign residents, $500 for Rest of Africa and UGX 300,000 for East African citizens. UWA says foreign non-resident permits can only be booked through licensed tour operators, and permits are paid in full at the time of booking since the 7-day unpaid reservation window was suspended. UWA also runs low season rates for April, May and November at $600 for foreign non-residents, and those permits cannot be rescheduled.

From 1 January 2027 the standard gorilla tracking price stays at $800. This tour does not include the permit, so the $300 tour price sits on top of it.

The Same Trip Across the Border

Rwanda offers the same day out of Kigali with a shorter drive: Volcanoes National Park is about three hours from Kigali by road per Visit Rwanda, with briefing at Kinigi at 7:00 am, treks of 30 minutes to four or more hours at 2,500-4,000 m, and a 7 m distance rule. The permit is $1,500 from the Rwanda Development Board. One-day Rwanda tours from Kigali run from $260 plus the permit with Vista Safaris, or $2,650 with the permit included with Shalom Safaris.

Rwanda also gives a visa on arrival at $50, while Uganda requires an online e-visa in advance. If the Rwanda price and the shorter drive appeal more, look at the Rwanda day trek from Kigali or the permit-included Shalom Safaris 1-day trek. This tour's edge is the $800 Uganda permit against Rwanda's $1,500, which is the core of the Rwanda vs Uganda gorilla trekking question.

What Documents Do You Need for the Crossing?

You leave Rwanda and enter Uganda twice in one day, so the paperwork must be settled before pickup.

Passport, Visa and Yellow Fever Card

Travellers crossing from Rwanda into Uganda for Bwindi need a valid passport, a visa for Uganda or the East African Tourist Visa, and a yellow fever vaccination certificate. Uganda Immigration requires the visa to be applied for online before travel, with the approval letter carried, and a passport valid at least 6 months after arrival. The single entry tourist visa costs $50.

The East African Tourist Visa costs $100, covers Uganda, Kenya and Rwanda for 90 days, and is issued by the first country you enter, which suits this Kigali route if you plan more regional travel.

Permit Confirmation

Carry your gorilla permit confirmation as well. The permit is bought separately from this tour at $800 through a licensed operator, and rangers check it at the briefing. Keep the booking reference and the operator's contact details on your phone, since the pickup happens at 2:00 am and you may need to reach someone before the border opens the day's queue.
