What is Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and why do trekkers choose it over Rwanda?
Bwindi is a 321 km2 (124 sq mi) UNESCO World Heritage forest in Uganda that protects almost half of the world's mountain gorillas at a permit price well below Rwanda's.
The park became a national park in 1991, gorilla tracking started as a tourist activity in April 1993, and it joined the World Heritage List in 1994. The forest is over 25,000 years old and is the watershed for five major rivers flowing into Lake Edward. It is accessible only on foot, which is exactly why the trekking feels wild.
Why Uganda rather than Rwanda
Bwindi protects approximately 459 mountain gorillas, almost half the world's remaining population. The rest of the world's 1060 mountain gorillas live in the Virunga Ranges, including Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda. A Uganda permit for a foreign non-resident costs $800.00 under the Uganda Wildlife Authority tariff, while Visit Rwanda lists gorilla permits at $1,500.00 per person per day.
The trade-off is terrain and access: Bwindi's steep ridges demand more effort, while Volcanoes National Park is about 104 km from Kigali, roughly a three-hour drive. For the full head-to-head, see rwanda vs uganda gorilla trekking.

Which sector of Bwindi should you choose for your gorilla trek?
Bwindi has four trekking sectors, Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga and Nkuringo, and your arrival city and fitness should decide which one you book.
Permits are sold per sector, so pick the sector before you book anything else.
The four sectors
Buhoma in the north was the first sector to open and suits travellers coming from Kampala or Queen Elizabeth National Park. Ruhija and Rushaga sit on the eastern and southern ridges. Nkuringo in the south is the closest to Kigali via the Cyanika border, which connects Kisoro District to Burera District of Rwanda, and Katuna (Gatuna) connects Kabale to Rwanda.
Kabale to Ruhija is about 95 km over murram roads, about 4 hours, and Kabale to Nkuringo is about 105 km, also about 4 hours. A traveller flying into Kigali should look at Rushaga or Nkuringo for the shortest transfer. A traveller starting in Kampala saves hours by choosing Buhoma.
Our Bwindi gorilla trekking from Kigali page covers the southern sectors in detail.
| Sector | Best for | Access note |
|---|---|---|
| Buhoma | Kampala arrivals, first-timers | About 390 km tarmac then 82 km murram from Kampala |
| Ruhija | Kigali arrivals via Kabale | About 95 km murram from Kabale, about 4 hours |
| Rushaga | Kigali arrivals, habituation experiences | Southern sector, short transfer from Cyanika border |
| Nkuringo | Fit trekkers, Kigali arrivals | About 105 km from Kabale, about 4 hours |

What happens on a gorilla trekking day in Bwindi?
You report to the park before dawn for a briefing, then trek with rangers for between 2 and 7 hours to reach a habituated family and spend one hour with it.
Rangers lead every trek and visitors go in small groups.
How the day runs
Visitors go gorilla trekking with rangers to spend one hour with the gorillas. Uganda gorilla treks last between 2 and 7 hours with 60 minutes of observation, though tracking can take from 30 minutes to three quarters of the day, so prepare for both. Wear hiking boots or sturdy shoes, waterproof clothing, long sleeves and gloves, and maintain physical distance from the gorillas.
The Uganda Wildlife Authority prohibits flash photography. A porter can carry your backpack and help on steep sections. Rwandan operators print no porter fee on their official pages, and Ugandan tariffs likewise state no fixed figure, so agree a tip locally.

|---|---|---|
| Report time | Early morning briefing at park HQ | 07:00 at Kinigi headquarters |
| Trek length | 2 to 7 hours | 30 minutes to four or more hours |

How hard is gorilla trekking in Bwindi?
Bwindi trekking is demanding, because the park sits on steep ridges on the edge of the Albertine Rift and a trek can run from 2 to 7 hours.
Fitness matters more here than in Rwanda's shorter volcanoes treks.
Terrain and preparation
TripAdvisor reviewers describe exceptional biodiversity and steep ridges across roughly 320 square kilometres of forest. Because tracking can take from 30 minutes to three quarters of the day, you need to prepare for both a short walk and a long one. Pack rain gear, long sleeves and sturdy boots, and hire a porter if your legs or back need help on the gradients.
| Difficulty factor | Bwindi | Volcanoes |
|---|---|---|
| Typical trek | 2 to 7 hours | 30 minutes to four or more hours |
| Altitude range | Steep ridges on the Albertine Rift | Hikes at altitudes of 2,500m to 4,000m |
| Help available | Porters for backpacks and support | Porters available, fee not stated on official pages |

How do you get to Bwindi, and what is the distance from Kampala?
Bwindi is about 390 to 414 km by road from Kampala depending on the route, and it is also reachable by road from Kigali in Rwanda.
Long murram sections make a 4WD worthwhile on the Ugandan routes.
Routes into the park
The route Kampala-Ntungamo-Rukungiri-Kihihi-Buhoma runs about 390 km of tarmac then 82 km of murram road. The route Kampala-Kabale-Kanungu-Buhoma covers about 414 km of tarmac in roughly 6 hours then 120 km of murram for another 5 hours, and a 4WD is recommended. From Queen Elizabeth National Park at Mweya, Bwindi is about 160 km, and about 64 km from Ishasha.
Kabale to Ruhija is about 95 km over murram, about 4 hours, and Kabale to Nkuringo is about 105 km, about 4 hours. Coming from Kigali, the Katuna (Gatuna) crossing connects Kabale in Uganda to Rwanda, and Chanika (Cyanika) connects Kisoro District to Burera District of Rwanda. An East Africa Tourist Visa costs $100.00 and is valid 3 months for Rwanda, Uganda and Kenya, which makes a combined trip simple.

What is the Gorilla Habituation Experience and who should book it?
The Gorilla Habituation Experience lets you spend far longer with a semi-habituated family than a normal trek, for $1,500.00 for foreign non-residents.
It is the pricier, deeper version of trekking, offered in Bwindi and not in Rwanda.
What you get for the money
The Uganda Wildlife Authority tariff sets the Gorilla Habituation Experience at $1,500.00 for foreign non-residents, $1,000.00 for foreign residents and the rest of Africa, and UGX 750,000 for East African citizens, with rates including the guide fee, park entrance fee for the day and a community contribution. Operators package it as a 3 Days Bwindi Gorilla Habituation trip or a 4 Days version with 2 treks. Choose habituation if you want more than the standard 60 minutes and you are comfortable with a full-day forest effort.
Choose a standard trek if the permit budget is tight, since the ordinary Uganda permit is $800.00.
| Option | Price, foreign non-resident | Included |
|---|---|---|
| Standard gorilla permit | $800.00 | Ranger-led trek, 60 minutes with gorillas |
| Gorilla Habituation Experience | $1,500.00 | Guide fee, park entrance for the day, community contribution |

What is there to do in Bwindi besides gorilla trekking?
Beyond gorillas, Bwindi offers bird watching, nature walks and hiking, the Batwa experience, community tourism, Ride 4 a Woman mountain cycling and the Buniga Forest Walk.
Most of these run in half a day and pair well with a trek.
Wildlife, birds and culture
The park hosts 120 mammal species, 350 bird species, 310 butterfly species, 27 frog species and more than 1,000 flowering plant species. Over 350 bird species include 23 Albertine Rift endemics such as the African green broadbill and Shelley's crimsonwing, which makes Bwindi a serious birding stop on a Uganda trip. Cultural encounters with the Bakiga and Batwa run in Buhoma and Nkuringo.
The Batwa story matters. The 1991 park designation evicted the Indigenous Batwa, who were no longer permitted to enter the forest their ancestors hunted. Today the Batwa share their hunter-gatherer heritage through performances, workshops and village walks, and booking one puts money back with the community.
Our gorilla trekking and Batwa experience itinerary pairs a trek with a Batwa visit.
| Activity | Where | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Bird watching | Forest trails, all sectors | Half day or more |
| Batwa experience | Buhoma and Nkuringo | Half day |
| Buniga Forest Walk | Near Rushaga | Half day |
| Ride 4 a Woman mountain cycling | Buhoma community | Half day |
| Nature walks and hiking | All sectors | Half day |

When is the best time to go and where should you stay in Bwindi?
Trekking is possible all year round in Bwindi, and lodges near the four sectors range from camps such as Nala Gorilla Camp to Kaara Mountain Gorilla Lodge.
Book lodging in the same sector as your permit to avoid pre-dawn drives.
Season and lodging
Uganda permits are sold for treks that run all year round, so season matters less than in some destinations, though the long treks feel harder in heavy rain. Sleep close to your trailhead. Lodges listed near the park include Erebero Hills, Nala Gorilla Camp, Kwetu Safari Lodge, Burunga Gorilla Lodge and Kaara Mountain Gorilla Lodge.
For a longer Uganda trip, five days covers gorilla trekking, chimp trekking and at least one boat safari, provided you do not cram too much into the itinerary.
| Lodge area | Sector | Example lodge |
|---|---|---|
| Buhoma | Buhoma | Erebero Hills |
| Buhoma area | Buhoma | Kwetu Safari Lodge |
| Southern sectors | Nkuringo or Rushaga | Nala Gorilla Camp |
| Southern sectors | Rushaga | Burunga Gorilla Lodge |
| Ruhija side | Ruhija | Kaara Mountain Gorilla Lodge |
Is it safe to visit Bwindi Impenetrable National Park?
Bwindi is visited safely by thousands of trekkers every year with armed rangers, though the region has a border history worth knowing.
Check current government travel advice before you book, as with any border region.
What the record shows
In March 1999, a force of 100-150 former Rwandan Interahamwe guerrillas infiltrated across the DRC border into the park area. That event is more than two decades old, and today treks run under ranger protection with strict rules such as facemasks and physical distance from the gorillas. For Rwanda's side, the UK FCDO advises against all but essential travel only to parts of Rusizi District within 10km of the border, and Volcanoes National Park is not under that warning, while Canada advises a high degree of caution in Volcanoes National Park along the DRC border.
Practical safety steps: book through a licensed operator, follow ranger instructions on the trail, keep your distance from wildlife, and carry your permit documents, since wrong or false applications can lead to denied entry at park gates.
| Advisory | Coverage |
|---|---|
| UK FCDO, Rwanda | Parts of Rusizi District within 10km of the border only |
| Canada, Rwanda | High degree of caution in Volcanoes National Park along the DRC border |
| Uganda, Bwindi | Not stated in the sources read for this page |
