Virunga Mountains: The Gorilla Volcanoes of Rwanda, Uganda and Congo
The Virunga Mountains are eight volcanoes on the borders of Rwanda, Uganda and the DR Congo, and Mount Karisimbi is the highest at 4,507 metres. Gorilla treks on the Rwandan side start at Kinigi with a 07:00 briefing and a permit price of $1,500 (US $1,500) per person per day.
Quick answer The Virunga Mountains in one answer
$1,500 (US $1,500) buys one Rwanda gorilla permit per person per day in the Virunga Mountains. The range has eight volcanoes across three countries. Treks start at 07:00 at Kinigi and gorilla time is one hour.

What are the Virunga Mountains?
The Virunga Mountains are a chain of eight major volcanoes running east to west along the borders of the DR Congo, Rwanda and Uganda.
A wrong belief to clear up first: the Virunga Mountains are not one park and not one mountain. The name covers a whole range of eight volcanoes, and each country protects its own slice of it.
Name and location
The name Virunga comes from the Kinyarwanda word ibirunga, meaning volcanoes, and the range is also known as Mufumbiro. It stretches about 50 miles (80 km) north of Lake Kivu. The mountains separate the basins of the Nile and Congo rivers, the only East African mountains of continental divide stature.
For a gorilla trekker this geography matters. The Rwandan trails leave from Kinigi, the Ugandan trails from the Mgahinga side, and the Congolese sector sits across the border in Virunga National Park.
| Volcano | Height | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Mount Karisimbi | 4,507 m | Rwanda border, highest in the range |
| Mount Sabyinyo | 3,634 m | Oldest of the chain, tri-border point |
| Mount Nyiragongo | 3,462 m | DR Congo, active |
| Mount Nyamuragira | 3,063 m | DR Congo, active |
| Mount Bisoke | 3,711 m summit | Rwanda, crater lake hike |
| Mount Muhabura | not stated | Rwanda and Uganda border |
| Mount Gahinga | not stated | Uganda, Mgahinga side |
| Mount Mikeno | not stated | DR Congo |
Why the range matters for gorilla trekking
The southern flanks of the central and eastern mountains form Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda, and Gorilla National Park covers the Ugandan slopes of Mgahinga. Virunga National Park covers the Congo side. So when you book a permit in Rwanda or Uganda you are trekking the same mountain range, just on different slopes.
That is the core of the rwanda vs uganda gorilla trekking decision. Same gorillas, same volcanic terrain, different permit price and access.

Which national parks cover the Virunga Mountains?
Three parks share the range: Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda and Virunga National Park in the DR Congo.
The same volcanoes fall under three different park authorities, and each sells its own permits with its own rules.
The three-country split
Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda is named after the chain of dormant volcanoes that make up the Virunga Massif. On the Uganda side, Gorilla National Park covers the slopes of Mgahinga and issues about 8 permits per day. The southern sector of Virunga National Park covers the Congolese side.
Border crossings between the two sides you can realistically combine are Katuna (Gatuna), which connects Kabale in Uganda to Rwanda, and Chanika (Cyanika), which connects Kisoro District to Burera District of Rwanda. Cyanika is the useful one if you sleep near Mgahinga and trek from Kinigi, or the reverse.
| Country | Park | What it gives a trekker |
|---|---|---|
| Rwanda | Volcanoes National Park | 12 habituated gorilla families, 07:00 briefing at Kinigi |
| Uganda | Mgahinga Gorilla National Park | About 8 permits per day, treks of 2 to 7 hours |
| DR Congo | Virunga National Park | Gorilla visits sold in packages, no single permit price published |

Are the Virunga volcanoes still active?
Most of the eight are dormant, but Mount Nyiragongo and Mount Nyamuragira, both in the DR Congo, are active and among the most active volcanoes in Africa.
For trekking in Rwanda and Uganda this matters little. The active cones sit west of the gorilla sectors.
Eruptions and what it means for trekkers
Recent eruptions occurred in 2006, 2010 and May 2021. The UNESCO World Heritage property that includes the Virunga massifs is listed as containing the two most active volcanoes in Africa. None of this affects the trekking slopes.
Your permit day on Bisoke, Sabyinyo or Karisimbi is on dormant volcanoes east of the Congolese border. The practical effect is only on trip planning if you hoped to add a Nyiragongo lava hike, which sits in the Congolese sector and is outside the scope of a Rwanda or Uganda permit.

How many mountain gorillas are left in Virunga?
The range holds roughly one third of the world's remaining mountain gorillas, and Virunga National Park alone protects 7,769 km² of habitat with 808 rangers.
The population was once far smaller. Thirty years before 2018 the Virunga Mountains population had fallen to about 240 individuals.
Signs of recovery
Virunga National Park records 18 gorilla births since the start of 2026, and the Bageni family grew to 61 members, the largest monitored group. On the Rwandan side, 23 groups live in and around Volcanoes National Park, of which 12 are fully habituated for visits, each with at least one silverback. Conservation research has deep roots here.
The Karisoke Research Center, founded by Dian Fossey, sits between Mount Karisimbi and Mount Bisoke, and 10% of Rwanda permit revenue goes to local communities.

What does a Virunga Mountains gorilla trek cost?
A Rwanda gorilla permit costs $1,500 (US $1,500) per person per day for a foreign non-resident, and the official day-tour prices on this site start at $260 per person plus the permit.
Permits are priced per person per day and bought separately from guided tours. Uganda and Congo price their permits through their own authorities.
Rwanda permit and discount schemes
The RDB portal prints a foreign non-resident gorilla tracking permit at $1,500 per person per day. Promotional rates published on the portal put East African and Rwandan citizens at $200 and residents or African citizens at $500, rates that are not valid from June to October. RDB also runs a 30% low season discount from November to May for trips that combine Volcanoes with Akagera or Nyungwe, one discounted permit per 3-day stay, and if you track all day without finding gorillas 75% of the tracking fee is refunded.
Only 96 permits are issued daily in Rwanda, eight per troop per day, so booking ahead matters. Advance booking works with a 40% to 99% deposit and the balance due before 30 days, and rescheduling costs a 20% fee if done more than 7 days ahead.

What are the trekking rules in the Virunga Mountains?
Minimum age is 15 for gorilla tracking, groups are capped at 8 visitors, viewing time is one hour and you must stay 7 metres from the gorillas.
The rules are set by the park authority that issues your permit. The Rwandan rules below are printed on the RDB portal.
Rwanda trek rules
Report to the Visitor Information centre at park entry at 07h00 for the briefing at the RDB offices in Kinigi. Hikes last from 30 minutes to four or more hours at altitudes of 2,500m to 4,000m, depending on the family assigned. Porters are available to carry packs, and gumboots, raincoats and gloves can be hired at park headquarters.
On the trail you keep 7 metres from the gorillas, wear a facemask at all times under the Gorilla Friendly Pledge, stay quiet and avoid rapid movements. Do not trek if you have a cold or flu. Flash photography is prohibited in Uganda's parks under the Uganda Wildlife Authority rules.
No-shows void the permit and there is no refund for late arrivals, and cancellations for any other reason get no refund.

What is the weather like in the Virunga Mountains?
Peak temperatures rarely exceed 30 C by day or drop below 15 C at night, and the Virunga mountains are the coolest place in Rwanda.
Weather decides what you pack, and the altitude of the trails makes the range cooler than Kigali.
What to pack
Kigali averages 21 C, but your trek starts at altitudes of 2,500m to 4,000m, so expect cooler air and rain in the forest. Bring hiking boots or sturdy shoes, waterproof clothing, long sleeves and gloves, as recommended in the Gorilla Friendly Pledge. Long pants are advised on the volcano hikes because of nettles.
Visa planning is part of the same practical picture. The East Africa Tourist Visa costs $100 and is valid for 3 months across Rwanda, Uganda and Kenya, which suits a trip that treks both sides of the range.

Is it safe to trek the Virunga Mountains?
The Rwandan and Ugandan trekking sectors are not under a do-not-travel warning, while the Congolese side of the park is affected by armed conflict.
Advisories treat the three countries differently, and the trekking areas most travellers use are on the Rwanda and Uganda slopes.
What the advisories say
The UK FCDO advises against all but essential travel only to parts of Rusizi District within 10km of the border, the Rwandan islands in Lake Kivu and Kamembe Airport. The rest of Rwanda, including Volcanoes National Park, is not under that warning. Canada rates Rwanda overall at normal security precautions, with parts of Rubavu and Rusizi districts and Volcanoes National Park listed under a high degree of caution.
Armed conflict is a documented issue for Virunga National Park on the Congolese side, and the Congolese sector sells visits only in packages through its own tourism team. For a Rwanda vs Uganda decision, both trekking sectors are visited on standard permits.
